Caroline Amstutz

Research Lead, Matter Design

Caroline Amstutz is a third year M.Arch candidate at MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning. During their time at MIT, Caroline has focused their studies on fabrication, craftsmanship, and explorations of traditional ecological knowledge. In 2021, they were a design-build resident for MOA's (Mobile Office Architects) Small Project Studio on Guemes Island, WA. Caroline is a graduate of Washington University’s Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, where they earned their B.S. in Architecture with a Minor in Fine Arts. At Washington University, Caroline assisted research for Derek Hoeferlin’s ongoing design-research project “Watershed Architecture,” exploring global relationships between rivers, infrastructure, and politics. Caroline is passionate about careful craft and close reading – whether binding a book to marry form with content or studying each groove of a lichen-covered morsel of bark, they hope to create architecture that honors context, detail, and the natural environment.
